Step-by-step guide to transfer files between Android/iPhone and computer using a USB cable

Gather required materials
Before starting, ensure you have all necessary items available for a smooth transfer process.
Use appropriate USB cable
Use the original cable that came with your phone or a certified replacement. Avoid cheap or damaged cables.
Ensure PC has available USB port
Use a working USB-A or USB-C port on your computer. Front ports may have less power.
Close resource-heavy applications
Close programs that may interfere with file access, such as sync apps or phone companion software.
Prepare your phone
Configure your phone settings before connecting to ensure proper recognition.
Unlock your phone
Unlock your phone's screen before connecting. Some phones require authentication to enable file transfer.
Check battery level
Ensure your phone has at least 20% battery to prevent unexpected shutdown during transfer.
Enable USB debugging (optional)
For advanced transfers or issues, enable USB debugging in Developer Options. Go to Settings > About Phone > tap Build Number 7 times > Developer Options > USB Debugging.
Connect phone to PC
Physically connect your devices and establish the data connection.
Plug cable into phone
Connect the smaller end (USB-C or Lightning) to your phone's charging port.
Plug cable into PC
Connect the larger end (USB-A or USB-C) to an available port on your computer.
Trust this computer (iPhone)
If prompted on iPhone, tap 'Trust' and enter your passcode to allow file access.
Access phone storage on PC
Navigate to your phone's files using your computer's file manager.
Open File Explorer
Press Windows key + E or click the folder icon in the taskbar to open File Explorer.
Locate your phone
Find your device under 'This PC' in the left sidebar. It appears as a removable drive with your phone's name.
Browse internal storage
Double-click your phone to access internal storage. Navigate to DCIM for photos, Download for files, or other folders.
Access SD card (if applicable)
If your phone has an SD card, look for it as a separate drive letter under your phone's folder.
Transfer files from phone to PC
Copy or move files from your phone to the computer.
Select files to transfer
Click to select individual files or Ctrl+A to select all. Ctrl+Click to select multiple specific items.
Use drag and drop
Drag selected files to a folder in the left panel or to a new window. Drop them in the destination location.
Use copy and paste
Right-click selected files and choose 'Copy', then navigate to destination and right-click > 'Paste'.
Transfer photos and videos
Navigate to DCIM or Pictures folder. Organize by date using subfolders created by your phone.
Transfer music files
Find music in the Music folder or Downloads. Check for DRM-protected files that may not transfer properly.
Transfer documents
Access Downloads, Documents, or app-specific folders for PDFs, Word files, and other documents.
Transfer files from PC to phone
Copy files from your computer to your phone's storage.
Navigate to PC folder
Browse to the folder on your PC containing files you want to transfer.
Select files to send
Choose the files or folders you want to copy to your phone.
Copy to phone folder
Drag files to your phone's folder in the left panel, or copy and paste into the appropriate destination folder on your phone.
Wait for transfer to complete
Do not disconnect until the transfer progress bar completes. Large files may take several minutes.
Safely disconnect phone
Properly remove your phone to prevent data corruption or file damage.
Close all file windows
Close any File Explorer windows that are accessing your phone's storage.
Use safe removal
Click the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the system tray, then select your phone.
Wait for confirmation
Wait for the 'Safe to Remove Hardware' message before unplugging the cable.
Unplug cable
Gently disconnect the USB cable from both devices once removal is confirmed.
