Prepare your computer

Ensure your computer is ready to receive files before connecting your phone.

Check available storage space

Verify your computer has enough free space to hold the backup. Go to This PC > right-click on drive > Properties to check available GB.

Create a dedicated backup folder

Create a new folder on your desktop or in Documents named with today's date (e.g., 'Phone Backup 2024-01-15') to keep files organized.

Install USB drivers if needed

For Windows, drivers usually install automatically. If your phone isn't recognized, download drivers from your phone manufacturer's website.

Close resource-heavy applications

Close programs that use significant disk or memory resources to prevent transfer interruptions.

Install phone companion software (optional)

Consider installing manufacturer software like Samsung Smart Switch, OnePlus Switch, or Google Files for enhanced backup features.

Connect phone via USB

Physically connect your smartphone to the computer using a compatible USB cable.

Use the original USB cable

Use the cable that came with your phone or a high-quality third-party cable. Cheap cables may not support data transfer.

Connect to a direct USB port

Plug into a USB port on your computer directly, not into a USB hub or keyboard, to ensure proper power and data transfer.

Wait for connection detection

Give your phone 5-10 seconds to detect the computer connection. You should see a charging indicator.

Check for notification on phone

Look at your phone screen for a USB connection notification or charging indicator.

Enable USB file transfer mode

Configure your phone to allow computer access to files.

Swipe down notification shade

Pull down from the top of your phone screen to reveal quick settings and notifications.

Tap the USB notification

Look for a notification about USB connection and tap it to open connection options.

Select File Transfer (MTP) mode

Choose 'File Transfer', 'Media Device (MTP)', or 'Transfer Files' mode. Avoid 'Charging only' mode.

Unlock your phone if required

Enter your PIN, pattern, or use fingerprint to unlock the phone if it prompts for authentication.

Grant file access permissions

If prompted, allow the computer access to your phone's files by tapping 'Allow' or 'Yes'.

Verify computer sees the phone

On Windows, open File Explorer and check if your phone appears under 'This PC' as a removable device.

Transfer photos and videos

Copy your media files to the computer for safekeeping.

Open phone in File Explorer

Double-click your phone's icon in File Explorer to browse its internal storage.

Navigate to DCIM folder

Open the DCIM folder which contains all photos and videos taken with your camera.

Select all media files

Press Ctrl+A to select all files, or click the first file, hold Shift, and click the last file.

Copy files to backup folder

Right-click and select 'Copy', then navigate to your backup folder and right-click > 'Paste'.

Check Pictures folder too

Also check the 'Pictures' or 'Screenshots' folder for additional images and screenshots.

Wait for transfer to complete

Do not disconnect until the transfer progress bar completes. Large transfers may take several minutes.

Transfer documents and downloads

Backup important files from other folders.

Navigate to Downloads folder

Go to your phone's Downloads folder and copy any important files you want to keep.

Check Documents folder

Look for PDFs, Word files, and other documents in the Documents or Downloads folder.

Copy WhatsApp media (if applicable)

Transfer music files

Check the Music folder and copy any locally stored music files.

Verify and safely disconnect

Ensure all files transferred correctly before disconnecting.

Check file count matches

Verify the number of files copied matches the source folder on your phone.

Spot-check file sizes

Right-click a few files and select Properties to confirm file sizes are reasonable (not 0 KB).

Open a sample file

Open one or two files (a photo or document) to confirm they are not corrupted.

Safely eject the phone

In File Explorer, right-click the phone icon and select 'Eject' before physically disconnecting.

Unplug the USB cable

Once safely ejected, pull out the USB cable from both computer and phone.

Store backup in safe location

Consider copying the backup to an external drive or cloud storage for additional safety.
