Checklist Items (20)

Gather materials and tools

List of supplies

Sandpaper (80, 120, 220 grits), chemical stripper, scraper, wood filler, stain (optional), polyurethane finish, brushes or foam applicators, tack cloth, drop cloths, safety gear.

Safety gear

Gloves, safety goggles, respirator mask (for stripper and dust), ear protection if sanding mechanically.

Prepare workspace

Choose well-ventilated area

Work outdoors or in a garage with open doors/windows to disperse fumes.

Protect floor and surroundings

Lay drop cloths or plastic sheeting to catch drips and debris.

Strip old finish

Test for lead paint (if applicable)

Use a lead test kit on older tables; follow EPA guidelines if lead is present.

Apply chemical stripper

Apply a thick, even layer with a brush; let sit per manufacturer's time (usually 15-30 mins).

Scrape off softened finish

Use a plastic or metal scraper to lift the finish; reapply stripper to stubborn spots.

Sand surface

Start with 80-grit sandpaper

Sand along the grain to remove remaining finish and smooth rough areas.

Progress to 120-grit

Sand again to eliminate 80-grit scratches; keep surface even.

Finish with 220-grit and clean

Sand lightly for a smooth base; vacuum dust and wipe with tack cloth.

Repair damage

Fill gouges and scratches

Apply wood filler with a putty knife; overfill slightly to account for shrinkage.

Sand filler flush

Once dry, sand the filled areas with 220-grit until level with surrounding wood.

Apply stain (optional)

Stir stain thoroughly

Stir gently to avoid bubbles; do not shake as it can create imperfections.

Apply and wipe excess

Use a lint-free cloth to apply stain with the grain; wipe off excess after 5-15 minutes for desired color.

Apply protective finish

Choose finish type

Select oil-based polyurethane for durability or water-based for low odor and quick drying.

Stir finish gently

Stir with a stick to avoid bubbles; shaking can cause imperfections.

Apply first thin coat

Use a high-quality brush or foam applicator; lay down a smooth, even layer following the grain.

Light sand between coats

After coat dries per manufacturer, sand lightly with 320-grit sandpaper; remove dust with tack cloth.

Final touches & cleanup

Buff surface

Use fine steel wool (0000) or a polishing pad to achieve desired sheen; optional: apply furniture wax.

Dispose of rags and clean tools

Lay oil-soaked rags flat to dry outdoors before disposal; clean brushes with mineral spirits (oil-based) or soap/water (water-based).
