Preparation

Gather necessary tools and safety precautions before starting.

Locate a clean, well-lit workspace

Choose a flat surface with good lighting to avoid losing small parts.

Gather small flat-head screwdriver or plastic pry tool

Use a plastic pry tool to prevent scratching the fob casing.

Obtain correct replacement battery

Check the old battery or vehicle manual for the correct size (e.g., CR2032).

Keep a small container for screws or small parts

Place any removed screws in a container to avoid losing them.

Identify Key Fob Type

Determine the make/model and battery type before opening.

Look for branding or model number on the fob

Check the front or back for logos, names, or numbers.

Check the back cover for battery compartment markings

Many fobs have the battery size printed inside the cover.

Refer to vehicle manual or search online using FCC ID

If unsure, consult the manual or look up the FCC ID on the fob.

Open Key Fob

Open the fob without damaging the casing or internal components.

Locate the seam or notch along the edge of the fob

Find the small gap where the two halves meet.

Insert a plastic pry tool into the notch

Gently slide the tool into the seam to start separating the halves.

Gently twist to create a gap and work around the perimeter

Move the tool around the edge, releasing clips gradually.

If screws are present, remove them with the appropriate screwdriver before separating halves

Some fobs have tiny screws; keep them in your container.

Remove Old Battery

Take out the depleted battery safely and note its orientation.

Note the orientation of the battery (+ and - sides) before removal

Remember which side faces up to install the new battery correctly.

Use a non-metallic tool to lift the battery out carefully

A plastic tool prevents shorting the contacts.

Place the old battery in a container for proper recycling

Do not dispose of batteries in regular trash; recycle them.

Insert New Battery

Place the new battery correctly, matching the old orientation.

Verify the new battery matches the old in size, voltage, and chemistry

Check the markings; using the wrong type can damage the fob.

Align the positive side as noted from the old battery

Match the + symbol on the battery to the marking inside the fob.

Press the new battery firmly into the compartment until it sits flat

Ensure it is seated securely without wobbling.

Reassemble Key Fob

Close the fob securely after installing the new battery.

Align the two halves, ensuring all clips line up

Match the edges and any internal guides before pressing together.

Press the halves together until you hear clicks all around

Apply even pressure to snap the clips into place.

If screws were removed, replace and tighten them securely

Use the original screws and do not over-tighten.

Test Key Fob

Confirm the fob works after the battery change.

Stand near the vehicle and press the lock/unlock buttons

Stay within a few feet to ensure signal transmission.

Observe if the vehicle responds (lights flash, doors lock/unlock)

A successful response indicates the battery is installed correctly.

If no response, reopen and verify battery orientation and seating

Recheck the + alignment and ensure the battery is fully seated.
