Checklist Items (23)

Gather and check your blood pressure monitor

Ensure you have a validated digital or manual sphygmomanometer, appropriate cuff size, pen, and log sheet.

Select a validated monitor

Choose a device with AAMI, BHS, or ESH validation label.

Check cuff size

Measure your arm circumference and select a cuff that covers 80% of the arm.

Verify device readiness

Insert fresh batteries or ensure it's charged; run a self-test if available.

Prepare recording tools

Have a notebook, chart, or blood pressure app ready to log readings.

Select the right time to measure

Pick a consistent time of day, avoid stimuli that can raise BP.

Measure at same times daily

Preferably morning before medication and evening before dinner.

Avoid caffeine, exercise, and smoking

Wait at least 30 minutes after caffeine, exercise, or smoking.

Empty bladder and rest

Use the restroom and sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring.

Position yourself correctly

Proper posture ensures accurate readings.

Sit with back supported

Use a chair with back straight and feet flat on floor.

Keep feet flat and uncrossed

Avoid crossing legs or ankles.

Support arm at heart level

Place forearm on a table with palm up; the midpoint of cuff should be at heart level.

Relax muscles

Rest arm comfortably, avoid tensing.

Apply the cuff properly

Correct cuff placement prevents false readings.

Expose upper arm

Remove clothing covering the arm; cuff should be on bare skin.

Align artery marker

Match the cuff's artery marker to the brachial artery (inner arm).

Wrap cuff snugly

Fasten so you can slip only one fingertip under the edge; not too loose or tight.

Take the blood pressure reading

Follow the device's procedure to obtain systolic/diastolic values.

Remain still and silent

Do not talk or move during measurement.

Start the measurement

Press start button; for manual, inflate cuff to ~30 mmHg above expected systolic, then deflate slowly.

Record the numbers

Note systolic, diastolic, and pulse rate displayed.

Repeat after a brief pause

Wait 1 minute, then take a second reading; average if they differ by ≤5 mmHg.

Record and store the results

Keep a log for tracking trends and sharing with healthcare provider.

Log date, time, and readings

Write or enter systolic/diastolic/pulse with timestamp.

Note any influencing factors

Record if you felt stressed, took medication, or had recent activity.

Sync with health app if desired

Upload to Apple Health, Google Fit, or a dedicated BP app for trends.

Interpret readings and act accordingly

Compare to your target range and know when to seek help.

Check against goal BP

For most adults, aim <130/80 mmHg; confirm personal target with doctor.

Know when to contact clinician

If readings ≥180/110 mmHg or you have symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, call emergency services.
