Checklist Items (21)

Gather Tools and Materials

Collect all necessary tools before starting to avoid interruptions.

Select picture hanging hardware

Choose hooks, nails, or wall anchors rated for your frame's weight.

Get a stud finder

Use a stud finder to locate wooden studs behind drywall for secure mounting.

Get a tape measure

A flexible tape measure helps measure frame dimensions and wall distances accurately.

Get a level and pencil

A bubble or laser level ensures frames are straight; a pencil marks reference points.

Choose Hanging Location

Decide where on the wall the frame will look best and be safe.

Determine eye-level height

Aim for the center of the frame to be about 57–60 inches from the floor.

Consider furniture and lighting

Ensure the frame complements nearby furniture and is not in direct sunlight that could fade it.

Check for obstructions

Verify there are no light switches, vents, or cables behind the chosen spot.

Measure and Mark

Take measurements and transfer them to the wall.

Measure frame dimensions

Record the width and height of the frame to calculate placement.

Find the frame's center point

Measure half the width and half the height to locate the center for hanging.

Mark the top edge on the wall

Lightly pencil a line where the top of the frame will sit, using your desired height.

Prepare Wall

Ready the wall surface for hardware installation.

Locate studs with stud finder

Run the stud finder horizontally across the marked area to detect stud edges.

Decide on hardware type

If a stud is present, use a wood screw or nail; otherwise select appropriate wall anchor.

Drill pilot hole if needed

For anchors or screws, drill a pilot hole matching the anchor size to prevent wall damage.

Install Hanging Hardware

Securely attach hooks, nails, or anchors to the wall.

Insert wall anchor (if using)

Tap the anchor into the pilot hole until flush with the wall surface.

Screw in hook or nail

Drive the hardware to the proper depth, leaving enough exposed to hold the frame.

Attach hanging hardware to frame

If the frame lacks D-rings or wire, affix them securely to the back.

Hang Frame and Check Level

Place the frame on the hardware and verify it is level.

Hang the frame

Lift the frame and hook it onto the installed hardware.

Check level on top edge

Place a level along the top of the frame; the bubble should be centered.

Adjust if not level

Loosen the hardware slightly, shift the frame, then retighten until level.

Final Adjustments and Safety

Make sure the frame is secure and the wall looks clean.

Secure frame and check stability

Press gently on each corner; the frame should not move or wobble.

Clean up marks and protect wall

Erase any pencil lines and consider adding felt pads to bottom corners to prevent scratches.
