Checklist Items (20)
Assess your home security needs
Walk through your property to list all doors, windows, and other entry points that need protection.
Identify all entry points (doors, windows, garage)
Make a sketch or list of each opening, noting size and type.
Determine which areas need monitoring (perimeter, interior)
Decide if you want exterior coverage, interior motion, or both.
Choose between wired and wireless systems
Decide which technology fits your skill level and home layout.
Evaluate pros/cons of wired (reliable, harder install)
Wired systems need running cables but offer constant power and signal.
Evaluate pros/cons of wireless (easy install, battery life)
Wireless kits are quicker to place but require battery maintenance.
Set a realistic budget
Outline how much you can spend on equipment and any optional extras.
List must-have items and approximate costs
Include hub, sensors, cameras, siren, and signage.
Decide on optional upgrades and their price range
Consider smart locks, glass‑break sensors, or environmental monitors.
Research compatible brands and kits
Find DIY kits that work with your smartphone and home network.
Purchase equipment
Buy from trusted retailers and verify the package contents.
Prepare installation tools
Gather the tools you’ll need to mount devices securely.
Gather screwdriver set, drill, level, measuring tape
Having the right tools prevents stripped screws and uneven mounts.
Have smartphone or tablet ready for app setup
Ensure it’s charged and connected to your home Wi‑Fi.
Install the hub/base station
Place the hub where it can communicate with all sensors.
Choose a central location near power outlet and router
Ideal spots are a living room shelf or office desk.
Connect hub to power and Ethernet (if wired) or Wi‑Fi
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to link the hub to your network.
Mount door/window sensors
Install sensors on each entry point you identified.
Clean surface, align magnet and sensor, secure with screws/adhesive
Use the supplied adhesive pads or screws for a firm hold.
Test each sensor by opening/closing the door/window
The app should show the sensor status change instantly.
Place motion detectors and cameras
Position detectors to cover high‑traffic zones and cameras at key views.
Position motion detectors in high‑traffic areas, avoid pets
Mount 6–8 feet high, aiming across walkways, not directly at heat sources.
Mount cameras at entry points, angle to cover field of view, ensure power
Use outdoor‑rated housings for exterior cameras and run power cords or use solar panels.
Configure the system via mobile app
Pair devices, set preferences, and enable alerts.
Download the manufacturer’s app, create account, add hub
Follow the in‑app wizard to detect and name each device.
Name each sensor, set entry/exit delays, enable notifications
Give clear labels like ‘Front Door’ and adjust delay times to suit your routine.
