Prepare an authenticator app
Choose a reliable TOTP app such as Google Authenticator, Authy, or Microsoft Authenticator.
Select an authenticator app
Google Authenticator (Android/iOS), Authy (multi‑device sync), or Microsoft Authenticator are widely supported.
Install the app
Download from the official app store (Google Play Store or Apple App Store).
Set up account recovery
Enable backup sync or note the secret key in case you lose your device.
Find the 2‑Step Verification section
Under "Signing in to Google," click 2‑Step Verification.
Start setup wizard
Click Get Started and re‑enter your password if prompted.
Choose verification method
Select Authenticator app and click Next.
Scan QR code and verify
Open your authenticator app, scan the QR code shown, then enter the 6‑digit code to verify.
Locate two‑step verification
Under "Advanced security options," click Get started next to Two‑step verification.
Choose an authenticator app
Select an authenticator app as the verification method and click Next.
Scan the QR code
Use your authenticator app to scan the displayed QR code, then enter the generated code.
Finish and save recovery code
Microsoft will show a recovery code; store it in a safe place.
Turn on two‑step verification
Toggle the Two‑step verification switch and follow the prompts.
Select authenticator app method
Choose to use an authenticator app rather than SMS.
Scan QR code and confirm
Scan the QR code with your authenticator app, then enter the 6‑digit code to activate.
Enable 2FA for Apple iCloud Mail
Set up two‑factor authentication for your Apple ID, which protects iCloud Mail.
Go to Security section
In the account page, select Security and click Edit.
Turn on two‑factor authentication
If not already enabled, click Turn On Two‑Factor Authentication and follow the prompts.
Verify with a trusted device
Enter the verification code sent to your trusted device or phone number.
Finalize and test the setup
Verify that 2FA works and store backup codes securely.
Test login with 2FA
Log out of your email account, then log back in and approve the prompt from your authenticator app.
Save backup/recovery codes
Download or copy the backup codes provided during setup and store them in a password manager or printed copy.
Consider additional recovery options
Add a secondary phone number or email for account recovery in case you lose access to your authenticator app.
