Checklist Items (24)

Gather tools and materials

Collect everything you need before starting to avoid interruptions.

Select appropriate LED bulb

Match the wattage equivalent, base type (E26/E12/GU10), and color temperature to your fixture.

Get a sturdy ladder or step stool

Ensure it is rated for your height and placed on a stable surface.

Gather safety gear

Wear insulated gloves and safety glasses to protect hands and eyes.

Have a voltage tester or non-contact tester

Use to confirm power is off before touching the socket.

Ensure safety by turning off power

Prevent electric shock by disconnecting the circuit.

Locate the circuit breaker for the light fixture

Find the breaker labeled for the room or use trial and error.

Switch the breaker to the OFF position

Firmly push the switch to off; you should feel a click.

Verify power is off with a voltage tester

Touch the tester probes to the socket contacts; no light or sound indicates off.

Place a warning note on the breaker panel

Inform others not to reset the breaker while you work.

Prepare the fixture

Make the bulb accessible and safe to handle.

Allow the existing bulb to cool if recently on

Wait at least 5 minutes to avoid burns.

Remove any lampshade, cover, or diffuser

Set aside carefully to avoid breaking.

Inspect the socket for dust or debris

Use a dry cloth to gently clean; ensure no moisture remains.

Remove the old bulb

Take out the incumbent bulb without damaging the socket.

Determine bulb type (screw, bayonet, pin)

Look at the base to know how to release it.

For screw-type bulbs, grasp the base and turn counter‑clockwise

Apply gentle, steady pressure; do not force.

For pin-type bulbs, push inward slightly then pull straight out

Release the retaining clips before removing.

Set the old bulb aside for proper disposal or recycling

LEDs can be trashed; CFLs need hazardous waste handling.

Install the LED bulb

Seat the new bulb correctly to ensure good contact.

Confirm the LED bulb base matches the socket

Check shape and size; do not force an mismatched bulb.

Insert the bulb into the socket

Align pins or threads; for screw types, start turning clockwise.

Secure the bulb

Turn screw-type bulbs clockwise until snug; for pin types, press until clicks.

Avoid over‑tightening to prevent glass damage

Snug is enough; excessive force can crack the bulb or socket.

Test the installation and finish up

Verify the LED works and restore the area.

Restore power at the breaker

Switch the breaker back to ON.

Turn the light switch on

Check for immediate illumination.

Observe the LED for proper operation

Look for steady light, correct brightness, and no flickering.

If the light does not work, re‑check connections

Ensure bulb is seated, power is on, and try a different bulb if needed.

Replace any shades or covers and clean up

Store tools, dispose of packaging, and note the bulb specs for future reference.
