Checklist Items (22)

Gather tools and information

Collect all necessary tools and information before starting the installation to avoid interruptions.

Identify thermostat model and compatibility

Check the model number of your new thermostat and verify it works with your HVAC system (voltage, stages, heat pump vs. conventional).

Assemble required tools

Gather a screwdriver set, needle-nose pliers, wire stripper, level, drill with appropriate bits, and a non-contact voltage tester.

Document existing wiring

Take a clear photo of the current thermostat wiring and label each wire with masking tape according to its terminal letter.

Turn off power to the HVAC system

Ensure safety by cutting power at the breaker before touching any wires.

Locate the HVAC circuit breaker

Find the breaker labeled for furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump in your electrical panel.

Switch off and verify power loss

Flip the breaker to OFF and use a voltage tester at the thermostat wires to confirm no power is present.

Remove the old thermostat (if replacing)

Carefully detach the existing thermostat to expose the wiring and mounting base.

Remove the thermostat cover

Gently pull or unscrew the cover to access the sub‑base and wires.

Label each wire

Attach a small piece of tape to each wire and write the terminal letter (R, C, W, Y, G, etc.) to avoid confusion later.

Unscrew and detach the mounting base

Loosen the screws holding the base to the wall and remove it, leaving the wires protruding.

Install the new thermostat base

Mount the new thermostat's backplate securely and level on the wall.

Position and level the base

Hold the base against the wall, use a level to ensure it is straight, then mark the screw holes.

Drill holes, insert anchors, and secure the base

Drill pilot holes, insert wall anchors if needed, and screw the base firmly into place.

Wire the thermostat

Connect the HVAC wires to the appropriate terminals on the thermostat base.

Match labeled wires to terminals

Refer to your wiring photo and thermostat manual to match each wire to its correct terminal (R, C, W, Y, G, O/B, etc.).

Insert wires and tighten screws

Insert each wire into its terminal clamp and tighten the screw until the wire is snug and does not slip.

Verify C‑wire presence or use power extender kit

If your system lacks a C‑wire, install a power extender kit (PEK) or run a new common wire to ensure the thermostat receives continuous power.

Attach the thermostat display and restore power

Snap the display onto the base and turn the breaker back on to power the device.

Snap the display onto the base

Align the thermostat face with the base and press firmly until it clicks into place.

Turn the breaker back on

Return to the electrical panel and switch the HVAC breaker to ON, then verify the thermostat powers up.

Initial setup and configuration

Configure basic settings such as date, time, system type, and preferences before programming the schedule.

Set date and time

Use the thermostat menu to enter the current date and time; enable automatic DST adjustment if available.

Select system type

Choose the correct HVAC configuration (e.g., 1‑heat/1‑cool, heat pump, multi‑stage) as indicated in your equipment manual.

Adjust preferences

Set temperature scale (°F or °C), enable fan auto mode, and activate any desired features like adaptive recovery or humidity control.

Program schedule and test operation

Create heating and cooling setpoints for different times of day and verify the system responds correctly.

Define weekday periods

Set Wake, Leave, Return, and Sleep periods for Monday‑Friday with appropriate start times.

Define weekend periods

Set Wake, Leave, Return, and Sleep periods for Saturday and Sunday (often combined).

Assign temperature setpoints

Enter desired heating and cooling temperatures for each period (e.g., 68°F heat Wake, 62°F heat Sleep).

Run a test cycle

Manually trigger heating and cooling to confirm the thermostat signals the HVAC equipment and the system responds within a few minutes.
