Checklist Items (20)
Prepare for the filter change
Gather necessary tools and information before starting.
Turn off the HVAC system at the thermostat
Set thermostat to off or disconnect power to prevent the fan from running while you work.
Locate the filter compartment
Usually found near the return air duct or inside the air handler/furnace cabinet.
Note the existing filter size and type
Check the dimensions printed on the filter frame (e.g., 20x25x1) and whether it's pleated, fiberglass, or HEPA.
Ensure safety precautions
Protect yourself and the system from injury or damage.
Wear protective gloves and a dust mask
Prevent irritation from dust and debris when handling the old filter.
Confirm power is off at the circuit breaker
For added safety, switch off the breaker supplying the HVAC unit.
Access the filter housing
Open the panel or door that protects the filter.
Remove any fasteners or clips securing the access panel
Use a screwdriver if needed; keep screws in a small container to avoid loss.
Open the panel and set it aside safely
Lean the panel against a wall or place it on a soft surface to prevent damage.
Remove the old air filter
Take out the used filter while observing its orientation.
Slide the filter out of its slot
Pull it straight out; avoid bending the frame.
Check the airflow direction arrow on the filter frame
Note which way the arrow points; this indicates the direction of air flow through the filter.
Place the old filter in a plastic bag for disposal
Seal the bag to contain dust before throwing it away.
Clean the filter housing area
Remove dust and debris to ensure proper seating of the new filter.
Vacuum the interior of the filter slot
Use a vacuum with a hose attachment to remove loose particles.
Wipe down the frame with a slightly damp cloth
Remove any stubborn dust; allow the surface to dry before installing the new filter.
Install the new air filter
Insert the replacement filter correctly.
Unpack the new filter and verify it matches the noted size
Ensure the dimensions and type (pleated, etc.) are correct for your system.
Align the airflow arrow on the filter with the direction of air flow
The arrow should point toward the blower/fan side of the unit.
Slide the filter fully into the slot until it is seated
Make sure it sits flat and does not protrude or bend.
Verify proper installation and system operation
Close up and test the system to ensure everything works.
Close and secure the access panel
Replace any screws or clips and ensure the panel is flush.
Restore power at the circuit breaker and thermostat
Turn the breaker back on and set the thermostat to desired mode.
Turn the HVAC system on and listen for abnormal noises
Run the system for a few minutes; check for whistling or rattling that could indicate a misaligned filter.
Complete cleanup and record maintenance
Dispose of the old filter, store tools, and note the service date.
Dispose of the old filter according to local waste guidelines
Some areas allow regular trash; others may require recycling if the filter is metal‑frame.
Record the date of filter change on a label or home maintenance log
Helps track replacement intervals (typically every 1–3 months).
