Smoke Alarms
Ensure smoke alarms are installed on every level, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas.
Test alarm monthly
Press the test button on each alarm to verify it sounds. Replace if no sound.
Replace batteries annually
Change batteries at least once a year or when the alarm chirps.
Check expiration date
Smoke alarms typically last 10 years; replace the unit if older than manufacturer's recommendation.
Ensure proper placement
Install alarms on the ceiling or high on walls, away from corners, vents, and ceiling fans.
Select correct type
Choose an ABC-rated extinguisher for ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, and electrical equipment.
Check pressure gauge
Verify the gauge needle is in the green zone; if not, service or replace.
Inspect accessibility
Mount extinguisher visible and reachable, not blocked by furniture or curtains.
Draw floor plan
Sketch each level, marking two exits per room and a safe meeting point outside.
Practice drills
Conduct a fire drill at least twice a year, simulating different exit routes.
Keep exits clear
Ensure doors and windows open easily; remove furniture, debris, or locks that hinder escape.
Electrical Safety
Reduce fire risk from electrical sources by inspecting cords, outlets, and appliances.
Inspect cords and plugs
Look for frayed, cracked, or damaged cords; replace or repair immediately.
Avoid overloading outlets
Plug no more than one high-wattage appliance per outlet; use power strips with surge protection.
Test GFCI/AFCI
Press the test button on GFCI and AFCI outlets monthly to ensure they trip correctly.
Never leave cooking unattended
Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling; use a timer as reminder.
Keep flammable items away
Store towels, paper, and curtains at least three feet from the stove.
Clean grease buildup
Regularly clean stovetop, oven, and exhaust hood to prevent grease fires.
Check appliance cords
Inspect cords of toasters, microwaves, and coffee makers for damage; replace if worn.
Annual furnace inspection
Have a qualified technician inspect and clean the furnace before heating season.
Space heater safety
Keep heaters at least three feet from combustible materials; turn off when leaving room.
Chimney and vent cleaning
Have chimney flues cleaned and inspected yearly to prevent creosote buildup.
Flammable Materials Storage
Store gasoline, paints, solvents, and other flammables safely away from ignition sources.
Use approved containers
Store flammable liquids in UL-listed, tightly sealed containers labeled for contents.
Separate from heat
Keep storage area away from furnace, water heater, sunlight, and electrical panels.
Outdoor & Yard Safety
Reduce fire hazards around the home's exterior, including grills and yard waste.
Grill safety
Place grill at least ten feet from house, overhanging branches, and railings; never leave unattended.
Clear debris
Remove dry leaves, pine needles, and other combustible yard waste from gutters, roofs, and near foundations.
