Checklist Items (24)

Pre-ride Inspection

Perform a quick overall check before each ride to catch obvious issues.

Check tire pressure

Use a floor pump with gauge to inflate tires to the recommended PSI printed on the sidewall.

Inspect tires for damage

Look for cuts, punctures, embedded debris, or sidewall cracks; replace if damage is deep.

Spin wheels to check trueness

Lift the bike and spin each wheel; watch for wobble or rubbing against brakes; true if needed.

Test brake lever feel

Squeeze each brake lever; it should feel firm and engage the wheel before the lever hits the handlebar.

Drivetrain Maintenance

Keep the chain, cassette, and chainrings clean and properly lubricated for smooth shifting.

Clean chain with degreaser

Apply bike-specific degreaser, scrub with a brush, then rinse and dry.

Check chain wear

Use a chain checker tool; replace if elongation exceeds 0.5% (1/16 inch over 12 inches).

Inspect cassette and chainring teeth

Look for hooked or worn teeth; replace cassette or chainrings if shaping is uneven.

Lubricate chain and wipe excess

Apply a drop of lube to each roller, let penetrate, then wipe off excess with a rag.

Brakes

Ensure brakes provide reliable stopping power and are free of contamination.

Inspect brake pad wear

For rim brakes, ensure pad grooves are visible; for disc brakes, check pad thickness >1mm.

Check brake cable tension or hydraulic fluid

For cable brakes, adjust barrel adjuster for slight lever play; for hydraulics, check fluid level and top off if needed.

Test brake lever reach and feel

Lever should engage smoothly; adjust reach screw if fingers cannot comfortably grasp lever.

Verify rotor/truing or rim braking surface

Look for warped rotors (side-to-side wobble) or glazed rim surfaces; clean with isopropyl alcohol if needed.

Wheels & Tires

Check hubs, spokes, and tire seating for safety and performance.

Remove wheel (quick-release/thru-axle)

Open quick-release lever or unscrew thru-axle, then lift wheel out of dropouts.

Inspect hub bearings for play

Hold wheel and try to wiggle side-to-side; any play indicates need for bearing adjustment or replacement.

Check spoke tension

Squeeze pairs of spokes; they should feel firm and similar; loose spokes need tightening.

Install wheel and secure axle

Seat wheel fully in dropouts, close quick-release lever firmly or torque thru-axle to manufacturer spec.

Frame & Cockpit

Inspect frame integrity and ensure controls are tight and comfortable.

Inspect frame for cracks or damage

Look at welds, joints, and tube surfaces for any cracks, dents, or paint lifting.

Check headset for play

Apply front brake and rock bike forward/backward; any knocking indicates headset looseness.

Tighten stem and handlebar bolts

Use a torque wrench to tighten stem bolts to spec (usually 5-7 Nm) and handlebar clamp bolts.

Verify saddle height, tilt, and pedal condition

Ensure saddle is at proper height, level, and securely clamped; check pedals for smooth rotation.

Final Check & Lubrication

Apply finishing lubricants, perform a test ride, and record the service.

Lubricate derailleur pivots and brake pivots

Apply a light oil to pivot points; move parts to work in lubricant, then wipe excess.

Lubricate cable housings (if applicable)

Add a few drops of light oil into cable ends or use a cable lubricator for smoother actuation.

Take short test ride, listen for noises

Ride a few minutes, shift through gears, brake firmly; listen for creaks, clicks, or rubbing.

Record maintenance date and observations

Write down date, mileage, and any parts replaced or issues noted for future reference.
