Prepare for installation

Gather tools and materials

Smoke detector (battery-operated or hardwired)

Ensure it is UL listed and not expired.

Mounting bracket and screws

Usually included with detector.

Drill with appropriate bit size

Use a bit slightly smaller than the screw diameter for pilot holes.

Screwdriver (Phillips or flat-head)

Matches the supplied screws.

Wire stripper and voltage tester (for hardwired models)

Turn off power at circuit breaker before working.

Ladder or step stool and pencil

For reaching ceiling and marking drill points.

Mount the detector bracket

Mark hole locations using the bracket as template

Hold bracket against ceiling/wall and trace hole centers.

Drill pilot holes at marked points

Drill to depth sufficient for anchors if needed.

Insert plastic anchors if mounting into drywall without stud

Tap anchors flush with surface.

Secure bracket with screws

Tighten until bracket is flush and stable.

Wire the detector (hardwired models only)

Connect wires: black (hot) to black, white (neutral) to white, bare/green to ground

Use wire nuts; tug gently to ensure secure connection.

Tuck wires neatly into junction box

Avoid pinching wires.

Attach detector to bracket per manufacturer's twist or latch mechanism

Ensure it seats firmly.

Install battery (battery-operated models only)

Open battery compartment

Slide or press latch as indicated.

Insert fresh 9V or AA battery observing polarity (+/-)

Use alkaline battery for best life.

Close compartment securely

Ensure latch clicks.

Test and establish maintenance routine

Restore power (if turned off)

Turn breaker back on.

Press test button

Alarm should sound loudly; if not, recheck connections/battery.

Verify interconnect (if multiple units)

Ensure all linked detectors sound when one is tested.

Record installation date on detector or home maintenance log

Use a permanent marker or label.

Set monthly testing reminder and annual battery replacement schedule

Use calendar app or home maintenance schedule.
