Use a sink stopper, rag, or rubber plug to block the drain and prevent small parts from falling in.

Remove faucet handle

Depending on your faucet model, the handle may be held by a set screw, a hidden screw, or a lever mechanism.

Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the nut, or pry off the clip with a flat-head screwdriver.

Note cartridge orientation

Spray a little penetrating oil around the cartridge base and let it sit for 5 minutes.

Tap gently

Lightly tap the cartridge with a rubber mallet to loosen corrosion.

Pull out the cartridge

Use a cartridge puller tool or pliers to grip the cartridge and pull it straight out.

Prepare new cartridge

Check that the replacement matches the old one in size and shape.

Lubricate O-rings

Apply a thin layer of plumber's grease to the O-rings on the new cartridge.

Verify fit

Compare the new cartridge to the old; ensure tabs and notches align.

Install new cartridge

Insert the new cartridge into the faucet body, aligning it as noted.

Insert cartridge

Push the cartridge straight in until it seats fully.
